Coast Guard Historians' Office

The Coast Guard Historian’s Office has a wide-ranging collection of material that complements and, to some degree, duplicates the holdings in the National Archives. The collection consists of approximately 300,000 images and a small number of documents. The collection is open to researchers by appointment. Inquiries (written preferred) are answered to the most complete degree possible given limited staff. The major categories of materials in the office are:

· Cutter Files - generally photos, brief histories, news clips, decommissioning documents, and operational highlights

· Disaster/Event Files - includes photography and investigations of primarily post-World War II events, ie. maritime collisions, fires at sea, oil spills, & rescues

· Personnel Files - primarily on senior officers and famous Coast Guardsmen

· Aviation Files - almost exclusively photography related to Coast Guard aircraft

· Aids to Navigation (ATON) Files - includes lighthouses and lightships

· District Files - primarily photography of district resources, lifesaving stations, and air stations

· Subject Files - collections of materials pertaining to a diverse number of subjects from the Coast Guard Academy to World War II

· Reference Collection

· This consists of several thousand books, regulations, pamphlets, manuals, directives, newsletters, etc., that deal specifically with the Coast Guard or are Coast Guard publications.
